One of Sweden’s oldest instruments, the keyed fiddle is depicted in church paintings of the Middle Ages. The keyed fiddle is primarily associated with the Uppland area, rich in iron works, and it is there that the instrument has been developed from its more primitive forms (as in 3 a) to the modern chromatic keyed fiddle (3 b). The keyed fiddle has become popular in recent years and courses have been started in keyed fiddle construction in several parts of Sweden. The person most responsible for the development of the keyed fiddle during the 20th century is Eric Sahlström (3 b) who has been on tour outside Sweden several times.
