The cradle songs of the people have from the days of our culture’s childhood been sung by mothers and grandmothers for their children and grandchildren. These songs are usually short, consisting of one or two verses, but long monotonous rhymes for putting the child to sleep are also found (2 c). Two melodies dominate as the basis for Swedish cradle songs: the “fiskeskär” melody (2 a & c) and the “Folia” melody (Folie d’Espagne) (2 b). Both have wandered to Sweden from the south of Europe and taken root there. They have been sung in Sweden for several hundred years.
