RAP, RAGGA AND REGGAE IN
LUSAKA

MC WABWINO & SIGN

SIGN

Sign started in 1995. It is an a capella group made up of Chembe Mkunsha a.k.a. MC Wabwino, Cedrix Chipeta, Rodrick Shabukali, Martin Jere and Winfred Moonga. When preforming as SIGN they sing mainly gospel fused with rap and soul. The letters in the name stand for Singing In Gods Name. But MC Wabwino (the guy in the cap on the photo) also does a kind of Zambian ragga with instrumental backing. They live in the same neighbourhood and started to sing as a passtime.

The members of Sign arrange existing songs and compose their own songs. They sing in churches, festivals, hotels or just in the street. Since the repertory and the venues differs quite a lot their audience is also mixed; kids, old men, ladies: They all shake their heads and stamp their feet.

Their dream is to go international. They were about to record their first album when we met.
