Gospel Melodies International is spearheaded by pastor Lincoln Kariuki. He has also recorded Swahili-, Kikuyo- and benga music as well as rock, reggae and African traditional beats. This shows how the local gospel music in Kenya is actually borrowing it's music style from general popular musics.
Gospel Melodies International sing in churches "trying to show them about our love of God". They have also been performing at crusades, in schools and theatres.
Lincoln Kariuki is critical of the commercial producers:
They buy your music and from there you may never appear again. He (the
producer) will take the photos, he will take the music to the
media. So you remain in the media and your music remain in the
media and the music is in the market, but no artist...the music
remains with the producers and the artist is suffering back there
at home.
According to Lincoln Kariuki the main problem is that the radio stations doesn't record who is the owner of the music and how many times a song is played. The Copyright Society of Kenya has a problem when they are trying to collect the money due to lack of records and that the radio and clubs doesn't understand why they should pay or what they should pay. That's the reason why the Copyright Society have a difficulty in paying the composers/artists. There is a lot of ignorance and a need of education in these issues.
Lincoln Kariuki has started his own record company "Lincoln Productions" to stay in control of his music. Here is a sample of the title song Cangararai (.wav format 550 kB) from the cassette above.
