Jah-Mbo Rebels Band is a veteran reggae group in Kenya. The leader is Jack Malley. The others are Johnny Cool, Gohinj', Mungwana, Leviella, General Onyango, Sweet Pepe and Lady Bee. We met Jack, Johnny Cool and Sweet Pepe. They sometimes play at the Zanzi Club, sometimes at Hollywood Club. When we met them they were in the final stages of producing a CD with their own compositions which should be on the market now.
Besides playing as a band they also have a DJ operation, which
actually has financed the production of the record. In their
lyrics they use both Jamaican creole and Swahili. They picked up
the Jamaican creole or patois through listening to dance hall
music, like for exampel Stone Love's live dance hall tapes. Jack
says:
The lyrics is about what is happening in the world today.
We have a song called Total Madness, it's about kids that are
getting into drugs and that they should stay away from it, how
people are suffering, that is total madness. We have another one
in a dancehall, raggamuffin style in kiswahili. It's about a
woman who wants to keep two men at the same time.
Here is a piece of that song as Jack sang it during our interwiev (.wav format 220 kB).
