APOCALYPS

Che Kabungo Mutale
"Che" Kabungo Mutale

The Apocalyps group of three is wellknown among youngsters in Lusaka. They also have some international fame. We heard of them in Dar es Salaam. They rap with a heavy ragga flavor, but also sing ballads and soul. We only met one member of Apocalyps: Kabungo Mutale known as Che.

Che started with music in 1987 while still in school. He learnt to play the guitar and drums by just trying out the instruments. He played for a while with a reggae band called "True Africans". In 1993 Apocalyps was formed. They have been performing ever since and recorded a good number of songs. Nothing has so far been officially published, although you can easily buy a pirated cassette with Apocalyps recordings in Lusaka.

In November 1997 Apocalyps was was working on their first album and also a vidoe. Che was also working on another recording project. He is employed as a sound engineer at MUVI studios. Thus he has access to digital technology. Both recording projects are produced by Innocent M.

Apocalyps sings in English and local languages. About 50% of the lyrics are in local languages, predominantly Bemba (Che is Bemba), but also some Tonga, Nyanja and Losi. Their aim is to fuse their African culture with Western hip hop.
