AFRO REIGN

Bonny Harmony
Bonny Harmony

Afro Reign started in June 1996. The group's members are Bonny Harmony (real name Boniface Kalmera), Dray (real name Raymond Mutagahywa), Nature P. (real name Sebastian Muyanga, still in school and runs a show at Radio One) and Jewdy (real name Judith Wambura, also still in school).

Drays's father is a university lecturere. The others have similar backgrounds. According to Bonny and Dray it was their interest in basket ball that brought them to hip hop and rap. Dray was for a while a member of Kwanza Unit.

This a freestyling group. They often decide on a theme and freestyle over it, discuss and form a final version:
Our first song was called Afro Drama. Freestyling, bragging boasting and so forth. In the song Rejuvenation everybody has a verse.

Afro Reign has recorded in Master J's studio and with P-Funk. None of the members play instruments. Thus they have hired instrumentalists for some recordings, but most backgrounds are sampled from other rap records: Like in the more traditional rap.

They perform live in discos sometimes. During 1997 Afro Reign had performed live only three times.
